| Body fat calipers measure skin folds to calculate how much subcutaneous fat (fat under the skin) a person has. You then put your numbers into an equation to predict body density and body fat percentage. Body fat calipers won't measure your body fat perfectly, but they don't have to. As long as you can use them to monitor your own progress, over time, that's all that matters. |

| The 4 Site Skin Fold Directions |
| |
| SITE 1 – Bicep. Vertical Fold, halfway between shoulder and elbow, directly on bicep |
| SITE 2 - TRICEPS. With the arm resting comfortably at the side, take a vertical fold parallel to the long axis of the arm midway between the prominent bone at the top of the shoulder and the tip of the elbow. |
| SITE 3 - SUPSCAPULAR. Diagonal Fold, directly below the shoulder blade. |
| SITE 4 - SUPRAILIAC. Take a diagonal fold following the natural line of the iliac crest, just above the hip bone. |

| The 4 Site Skin Fold Guidlines |
| |
| 1. |
All measurements should be made on the right side of the body |
| 2. |
Caliper should be placed 1/2 inch away from thumb and finger, perpendicular to skin fold, and halfway between crest and base of fold |
| 3. |
Pinch should be maintained while ready the caliper |
| 4. |
Wait 1 to 2 seconds ( no longer) before reading caliper |
| |
| 5. |
Take duplicate measurements at each site and retest if duplicate measurements are not with in 1 to 2 mm |
| |
| 6. |
Rotate through measurement sites or allow skin to regain normal texture and thickness |

| Top Tips When Using Body Fat Calipers |
| |
| 1. |
Use body fat calipers to measure progress only. Don't compare body fat percentage to tables or norms. Even experts using the best body fat calipers can't be totally accurate. |
| 2. |
For greater accuracy, monitor changes with skin fold measurement rather than converting them into a body fat percentage and using that to judge progress. |
| 3. |
Take the reading within 4 seconds of applying the body fat calipers to the skin fold. A prolonged delay has been shown to significantly underestimate the actual skin fold value. |
| 4. |
Take measurements at the same time of day for each test |
| |
| 5. |
Don't have a test immediately after exercising. |
| |
| 6. |
Rotate through measurement sites or allow skin to regain normal texture and thickness |

| Knowing your body fat percentage can also help you determine if your weight loss goals are realistic. Remember, weight loss doesn't always mean fat loss. |
